Apple Dictation vs Rambleproof
Your Mac already has dictation, and for a lot of people it is enough. This page says plainly when it is, what Rambleproof does differently, and how to find out in ten minutes which one you need.
By Moe Lueker, founder of Rambleproof. Facts checked . We make Rambleproof, so read this as an editorial comparison with a stake in the outcome, not a neutral review.
The short version
If you dictate a sentence here and there, use Apple Dictation and keep your money. It is free, it is already installed, and it types into every app. Rambleproof is for people who want to talk through a whole thought, messily, and get clean text out: an email, a long prompt, a page of notes.
What Apple Dictation does
You turn it on in System Settings under Keyboard, then start it with the Microphone key or a shortcut. Apple's Dictation guide says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout, that it stops after 30 seconds without speech, and that in supported languages it inserts commas, periods and question marks for you. You can speak punctuation and formatting, and on a Mac with Apple silicon you can type while it listens. The text below Dictation in Keyboard settings shows whether your voice is processed on your device. It is part of macOS and covers many languages.
It writes what you said, as you said it. The words appear while you speak, which is useful for short text and less so for long text, because every “um”, repeat and restart is on the page too.
What Rambleproof does
You hold a shortcut, speak, and release. Nothing appears while you talk. After you release, the recording is transcribed on your Mac, cleaned on your Mac, and pasted at the cursor, usually in about a second. Cleanup removes fillers and false starts and applies the corrections you made out loud, so “Tuesday, no, Wednesday” becomes Wednesday. It then checks that numbers and negations from your speech are still there, and falls back to a simpler cleanup when they are not. A dictionary keeps your names and terms spelled your way.
Unlimited raw local dictation forever, with 15,000 AI-cleaned words each week at Light or Medium, then basic cleanup (fillers and punctuation, no AI rewrite) until Monday. Pro is $8 a month billed yearly. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 15 or later and a one-time activation, and English is the language we test and recommend.

When Apple Dictation is the right choice
- You dictate short things: a reply, a search, a reminder.
- You want to see the words as you say them.
- You dictate in a language other than English.
- You have an Intel Mac or an older macOS.
- You want to control the Mac by voice. That is Voice Control, also free and built in, and Rambleproof does not do it.
When Rambleproof is the right choice
- You dictate paragraphs, and editing the transcript afterwards is what slows you down.
- You change your mind mid-sentence, like most people do.
- You use names, products or technical terms that keep coming out wrong.
- You dictate prompts into AI tools, where more context helps and nobody wants to proofread it.
