The best dictation app for Mac (2026)

Start free: Apple's built-in dictation

Before buying anything, try what ships with macOS: System Settings, then Keyboard, then Dictation. On Apple Silicon Macs, general text dictation can be processed on device rather than on Siri servers, per Apple's documentation, it auto-punctuates in supported languages, and there is no session timeout (it stops after 30 seconds of silence). It is free and private. Its limits are the reason the category exists: no cleanup of fillers and false starts, no custom vocabulary to speak of, and accuracy that trails the modern Whisper-class engines. If you dictate a sentence a day, stop here and keep your money.

Best cross-platform polish: Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, claims more than 100 languages, and styles output per app. The catch is structural: transcription always happens in the cloud, per its privacy page, it needs an account and a connection, and unlimited use is a subscription at 12 to 15 dollars per month as of this writing. Our full review is here. If you live on several platforms and cloud processing does not bother you, it is the polished pick.

Best local toolbox: Superwhisper

Superwhisper runs Whisper and Parakeet models locally on Apple Silicon, adds optional cloud engines, and lets you build modes that reshape speech into emails or notes. Free tier forever, Pro at 8.49 dollars monthly, 84.99 yearly, or a 249.99 lifetime license, per its docs. It rewards people who like configuring their tools. Our review and comparison go deeper.

Best one-time purchase for transcription: MacWhisper

MacWhisper made its name transcribing files on device and has grown system-wide dictation. Everything runs locally, and Pro is a one time 64 euro license per its site, with a capable free version. If your real job is transcribing meetings and files, with dictation as a bonus, it is the sensible buy.

Best open source: VoiceInk

VoiceInk is GPL licensed, processes locally with whisper.cpp and Parakeet models, and costs 29 to 69 dollars once depending on how many Macs, per its site. You can read the code on GitHub, which for some buyers settles the privacy question better than any policy page can. It requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later.

Ours: Rambleproof, for rambling without consequences

Rambleproof is push-to-talk dictation, Mac only: hold a key, think out loud badly, release, and clean text that keeps your meaning lands at the cursor after the pipeline finishes. Local by default, no required account, cloud only with your own API keys. Cleanup removes fillers and false starts under strict guards and falls back when output looks unsafe. It is free while in preview; public pricing has not been announced. It needs macOS 26 on Apple Silicon and is also the newest app on this page and the least proven; that is the honest cost of picking us today.

A note on Dragon

People still search for Dragon on the Mac. Nuance discontinued Dragon Professional Individual for Mac in October 2018; existing licenses kept working but stopped receiving updates. Every option above is a better 2026 answer.
