Dictation for ChatGPT on a Mac
You get better answers from ChatGPT when you give it more context, and it is easier to give context by talking. There are three ways to dictate a prompt on a Mac. They differ in where they work and in what happens to the recording.
By Moe Lueker, founder of Rambleproof. Facts checked . We make Rambleproof, one of the options below. The other two are free and already available to you.
Dictation is not Voice mode
ChatGPT has two voice features. Voice mode is a spoken conversation: you talk and it talks back. Dictation turns what you say into text in the message box, which you can read and edit before sending. This guide is about dictation, because a prompt you can check is a prompt you can trust.
The three options
Scroll the table sideways to see all columns.
| Option | Where it works | Where speech is transcribed |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT's microphone button | The ChatGPT message box | OpenAI's models |
| Apple Dictation | Any text field | On the Mac or Apple's servers, as Keyboard settings show |
| Rambleproof (ours) | ChatGPT and every other app | On your Mac by default |
Option 1: ChatGPT's own microphone
Click the microphone in the message box, speak, and confirm. The OpenAI voice dictation FAQ says the recorded audio is sent to OpenAI's models to be transcribed, that you can edit the text before sending, and that the audio is kept for as long as the chat stays in your history. A data controls setting decides whether your recordings may be used to improve its models. It needs no setup, and it only works inside ChatGPT.
Option 2: Apple Dictation
macOS Dictation types into the ChatGPT app or the browser tab like any other field. Turn it on in System Settings under Keyboard, then Dictation. It writes down what you said as you said it, restarts included, and stops after 30 seconds of silence. See our guide to dictation on a Mac.
Option 3: a push-to-talk dictation app
With Rambleproof you click into the message box, press a key (Right Option on new installs), talk, and press it again. The speech is transcribed and cleaned on your Mac and pasted into the box. You read it, fix a name if needed, and send.
- No recording is uploaded. In Local mode the audio never leaves your Mac. Only the text you choose to send reaches OpenAI, exactly as if you had typed it.
- The ramble is removed first. Fillers, false starts and “actually, make that Tuesday” corrections are resolved, and the cleanup is rejected if it changed a number or dropped a “not”.
- It is the same in Claude, Gemini and your email. One shortcut and one dictionary, so you do not learn a different voice feature per assistant.
ChatGPT's input does not let another app read the field back, so Rambleproof cannot confirm that a paste arrived. If nothing appears, the dictation is still in its local History, and Control + Command + V pastes the last one again. Rambleproof needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 15 or later, and has a free plan.
How to speak a prompt that works
- The outcome. “Draft an email asking the supplier to confirm the new delivery date.”
- The context that changes the answer. What happened, and what you have already tried.
- The constraints. Dates, amounts, names and tone, with any “do not” in its own sentence.
- The shape of the answer. “A subject line and two short paragraphs.”
Then read the text once for names, numbers and negations before you send it. The full walkthrough with examples is in how to dictate prompts into ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Claude Code.
