Dictation for Claude Code on a Mac

Explaining a bug out loud is faster than typing it, and a spoken prompt usually carries more context. Claude Code has voice input of its own, macOS has one, and a dictation app gives you a third. Here is what each does and when to use which.

Option 1: Claude Code's own /voice

Type /voice in Claude Code to turn dictation on. By default you hold Space to talk and release to stop, and a tap mode is available. According to Anthropic's voice dictation documentation, it works in the Claude Code CLI, agent view and the VS Code extension, but not in cloud or SSH sessions. The same page says your audio streams to Anthropic's servers for transcription and is not processed locally, that it needs a Claude.ai login rather than an API key, and that it uses your project and branch names as recognition hints.

Use it if Claude Code is where you spend the day and that processing suits your work. There is nothing to install, and the hints from your repository help with names a general tool would miss.

Option 2: Apple Dictation

macOS Dictation types into whatever has the cursor, so it works in Terminal, iTerm and the editor's integrated terminal. Turn it on in System Settings under Keyboard, then Dictation. It types what you said as you said it, including the restarts, and it stops after 30 seconds of silence. Our guide to dictation on a Mac covers the setup.

Option 3: a push-to-talk dictation app

A dictation app sits outside Claude Code. With Rambleproof you click into the prompt, press a key (Right Option on new installs), talk, and press it again. The text is transcribed and cleaned on your Mac and pasted at the cursor. It is pasted, not sent: you read it and press Return yourself.

What that adds over the built-in options:

  • Your audio stays on the Mac. In Local mode nothing is uploaded to transcribe it. The prompt you then send goes to Anthropic like any typed prompt.
  • It works where /voice does not. Because the text is pasted into your terminal window, it does not matter that the session behind it is over SSH or in the cloud.
  • Rambling is cleaned up. Fillers, false starts and “no wait, I mean” corrections are resolved before the text lands, and the cleanup is rejected if it changed a number or dropped a “not”.
  • One shortcut and one dictionary everywhere. The same key works in Claude Code, the editor, the pull request description and Slack, and a saved word such as a package or teammate's name is spelled the same in all of them.

Rambleproof needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 15 or later. The free plan includes unlimited raw dictation and a weekly allowance of AI-cleaned words.

Tips for speaking to a coding agent

  • Say the outcome first. “Find why the Save button stays disabled after the form becomes valid” gives the rest of what you say a destination.
  • Speak the explanation, paste the exact strings. File paths, identifiers and error messages are quicker to paste than to spell aloud.
  • Put a negative constraint in its own sentence. “Do not change the public API.” A missing “not” is easy to spot there.
  • Read it before Return. An agent acts on what it received, and a mistranscribed prompt gets a reasonable answer to the wrong question.
  • Add the names you use to the dictionary. Project names and tools that are not ordinary words are where every recognizer struggles.

The longer version, with a worked example, is in how to dictate prompts into ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Claude Code.
